Adding individual-level variables

The next step was to add individual-level variables to the analysis. Building on the discussion in Chapter 4 and the existing literature, these can grouped into four categories: demographic, geographic (in addition to those measured at the LSOA level), routine activities, and social class related. It is worth noting that there are significant conceptual slippage between many of the variables that might be included in these categories – for example, ethnicity and social class may be linked with routine activities, which themselves are likely to be imbricated with issues of disadvantage – and the categories below should be considered illustrative, not definitional.
